A hot shot is a dedicated run. Rather than waiting for the next scheduled service and sharing a vehicle with other freight, your consignment goes on its own vehicle, direct, as soon as it can be loaded.
It costs more per kilogram than general freight, and for the right job it is comfortably the cheaper option. A scheduled service is the sensible choice for planned stock; a hot shot exists for the morning a rig is down, a pump has failed, or a component has been damaged in transit and the replacement has to be on site today.
